The wine industry in the United States is growing. Recent projections say the demand for wine packaging could increase 4.4 percent annually by 2019, making the market even more competitive. This is forcing wineries to become more practical and innovative, without compromising the quality of their product, to stay ahead of their competition. One way to do that is through packaging.
“Most wineries use RSC’s (regular slotted containers) to ship their wine,” says John Belforte, sales representative, WestRock. “Those boxes are great, but to get more bang for your buck, there are better options.”
Belforte recommends the Meta® System. He says Meta® is stronger and more functional for wine bottles in terms of stacking-strength and reducing damage during shipment.
In a recent trial with one of the largest wine producers in North America, Belforte and his team put the Meta® 150 machine to the test. They took two pallets of glass wine bottles and packaged them using the Meta® 8, fully recyclable, eight-sided stackable box. Because of the increased strength and unique center tabs with a locking feature, when stacked, the winery realized stronger palletization and saved a significant amount of money by reducing the use of plastic pallet wrap. The amount of turns per pallet was cut from 11 to eight.
The pallets were then shipped for over 160 miles by truck. Once they reached their destination, the cases were inspected. Minor damage was detected, none impacting the bottles. “It’s an obvious win for the winery,” says Belforte. “With over 98% case efficiency, the Meta® was able to reduce material and labor costs, along with a reduction in damage; overall cost savings to the product.”
The Meta® system can produce three, four, five, six, seven, or eight sided cases. This makes it ideal for wineries that produce “bag-in-box” wine. The Meta® BiB supports liquid transport cases offering significant advantages over rectangular-shaped boxes such as a higher compression strength, reducing flex cracking in the corners.
These additional sides also provide more real estate for printing. It gives marketers more of an opportunity for branding, messaging, and other ways to entice consumers, particularly in big-box stores where the box often serves as the display and the shelf.
